Presidential Executive Order Concerning Striped Bass and Red Drum
November 27, 2007
On October 20, 2007 President George W. Bush signed a presidential Executive Order aimed at protecting and conserving striped bass and red drum populations for the "recreational, economic, and environmental benefit of the present and future generations of Americans". Some of the key aspects of the Executive Order are to encourage states to create policies, such as gamefish designation status, that help conserve striped bass and red drum and it prohibits the sale of striped bass and red drum caught within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This Executive Order, however, does not open the EEZ to recreational fishing and the federal moratorium on harvest and possession of striped bass within the EEZ continues.
