Horseshoe Crab Harvest Moratorium

January 10, 2008

A continuation of the moratorium on the harvest of horseshoe crabs has been proposed by the NJ DEP's Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) to aid in preventing further declines of red knots and to promote their recovery.

A letter from DFW Director Chanda to the Marine Fisheries Council Chair can be viewed at www.njfishandwildlife.com/pdf/2008/hcletter.pdf (pdf, 39kb) on the Division's Web site.

The Notice of Rule Proposal can be viewed on the DEP Web site at www.nj.gov/dep/rules/notices/120307b.html. The Notice contains a link to the full proposal in PDF format. Written comments must be submitted by February 1, 2008.

NOTE: There will be a special meeting of the Marine Fisheries Council on February 11, 2008, regarding this issue.
