"Site Information" Page Continued: "Uploading Shapefiles"
The next step in providing the information required for the "Site Information" page involves uploading a prepared shapefile(s) (Assembled together as a "Zip" file). Preparing shapefiles for submission through the portal has it's own dedicated informational webpage: GIS Data Requirements for NJDEP’s RSP-LOI Service. There you will find information on what must be included in these files and how to properly format these files so that the upload process will go smoothly. When a zip file containing the required shapefiles is uploaded through the portal, there is a "Validation" process which occurs. If the procedures for creating the shapefiles and/or the zip file are not followed correctly, you will not be able to proceed past this point in the portal and will not be able to continue until the zip file and/or shapefiles have been correctly created and uploaded.
Assuming that you have correctly created your shapefiles and they have been properly bundled into a zip file, the next step is to use the "Browse" button under the "Upload Shapefiles" section and search your local computer for the file you wish to upload. Once you have found and clicked on that file, the upload and validation process will begin. If there isn't a problem with the zip file and/or shapefiles, you will upon completion of the upload and validation, see a map of your site along with all of the polygons associated with it, displayed against a local road map. Please check to make sure that the right polygons have been uploaded and are being displayed. You can always change which file has been uploaded by clicking on the "Remove" button (which will appear after the shapefile has been loaded.)
Note: Please give some time to the portal application for the shapefile to appear, the validation process can take some time.
Once the shapefile has loaded, under the shapefile results you will see:
- The "Site Coordinates" which refer to the calculated center of the site,
- The "Area in Acres" of all polygons which were uploaded to the portal,
- If there are any "Special Concerns", i.e. if the site polygon is within: The Pinelands, the Highlands, the Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission Area, and
- If an Endangered & Threatened Fauna and/or Flora review is required.
If everything looks as it should be and the polygon(s) is/are the correct polygons for the site for which you are applying for a LOI, than click the "continue" button. If they are NOT the appropriate polygons for the application, you must use the "Remove" button to remove the shapefiles and upload the appropriate shapefiles. If you receive an error message stating that the shapefile has some problems with it, than consult the GIS Data Requirements for NJDEP’s RSP-LOI Service information for clarification and reform your shapefiles to meet the required criteria. If you require additional assistance, you may contact our Technical Support Center staff via our web form or by telephone at (609) 777-0454.
