Flooding and Precipitation

This page provides links to data, maps, and information for emergency planners, emergency responders, and communities about flooding, extreme precipitation, and the potential health effects related to these events. The resources below can help communities prepare for and respond to weather-related events.

NJ FloodMapper Tool

Rutgers NJ Climate Change Resource Center’s NJ Adapt provides a suite of data-visualization and mapping tools for planners and communities to understand and adapt to the impacts of climate change on people, assets, and communities in NJ.

NJFloodMapper provides data on sea-level rise, hurricane surge, FEMA flood zones, and many other parameters, and provides map layers including: health-related infrastructure (hospitals, schools, long-term care facilities, child care centers, urgent care facilities, pharmacies); energy, communications, and financial infrastructure; and hazardous materials, transportation, and emergency management.

NJDEP Climate Resilience and Flooding

The NJ Department of Environmental Protection provides flood and extreme precipitation-related information, ordinances, data-visualization, and mapping tools which can be used by engineers, planners, environmental officials, local governmental officials, and homeowners.

CDC Data Explorer: FEMA-Designated Flood Hazard Areas

CDC’s National Environmental Public Health Tracking Program’s Data Explorer provides data-visualization and mapping tools for a host of environmental health topics, including flooding and extreme weather.

Planners, emergency responders, and health officials can view number of housing units within FEMA-designated flood hazard zones by county, and can add an overlay of hospitals, nursing homes, schools, day care facilities, and other sites.

CDC Data Explorer: Percent Area in Square Miles Designated As Flood Area

Planners and emergency responders can view the percent of square miles within FEMA-designated flood areas by county, and can add an overlay of hospitals, nursing homes, schools, day care facilities, and other sites.

CDC Data Explorer: Annual Number of Extreme Precipitation Days in New Jersey

Local and county planners and emergency responders can view the number of extreme precipitation days by census tract by year, and can add an overlay of hospitals, nursing homes, schools, day care facilities, and other sites. Users can run a time series to view the data by year.
