Attorney General Harvey Announces Availability of Information on Evening Voter Registration Hours Via Division of Elections Web site

TRENTON – Attorney General Peter C. Harvey announced today that a statewide master schedule of nighttime voter registration hours for the November 8 General Election is now available via the Division of Elections Web site at www.NJElections.org. The voter registration deadline is Oct. 11, 2005.

“Evening registration hours make participation in our democracy easier for many citizens who prefer to register in person but, by virtue of their jobs, child care responsibilities or a host of other factors, cannot get to a voter registration site during normal business hours, ” said Harvey.

Ramon de la Cruz, Director of the Division of Elections, noted that, “By statute every county is required to set, and provide a schedule for, evening voter registration hours. The Division of Elections is pleased to make this important information available to New Jersey citizens in one place -- the Division’s Web site.”

To register, those who wish to vote must be United States citizens, must be at least 18 years of age by the next election, and must have resided in their respective counties in New Jersey for at least 30 days prior to the General Election. Those seeking to register must not be on parole, probation or serving a sentence for conviction on an indictable offense under any federal or state laws. Residents may register to vote either in person, with their local municipal clerk or county commissioner of registration, or by mail. Residents who choose to register by mail can download a registration form from the Division of Elections Web site at www.NJElections.org, then mail the hard copy to their local county Commissioner of Registration. Mail-in registration forms can also be obtained from a municipal clerk, county commissioner of registration or the State Division of Elections. Forms can also be obtained at State Motor Vehicle Commission agencies, as well as a variety of other State offices.
