Winter 2026
Congratulations to all those who recently retired. We thank you and your families for your honorable service.
Please refer to the section below as we have some exciting events on the horizon.
On January 9, 2026, the NJ Department of Military & Veterans Affairs transformed into two separate, cabinet-level departments - the NJ Department of Military Affairs (DMA) at military.nj.gov and the NJ Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) at veterans.nj.gov.
I now fall under the DMA, but otherwise it's business as usual.
You can call me for an appointment which is usually on a Wednesday or Thursday at the Bordentown Armory. I can also see Retirees on Monday or Tuesday at JFHQs on Fort Dix.
If you have any questions or concerns or need assistance with paperwork, please feel free to call me at 609-500-4327 or email me at marie.s.durling.civ@army.mil.

| Navigating Life After the Loss of a Service Member
This class is for anyone who has 20 or more military years and is collecting or will be collecting a pension and chose Survivor Benefits.
When a service member passes away, your pension stops until your spouse fills out paperwork. Also DFAS will take back the money for the last month your service member was alive (so make sure you don’t write checks that may bounce). You will need to fill out an 1174 and they will re-deposit that last check. Then there is paperwork that needs to be completed so the surviving spouse will collect 55% of their spouses pension.
These classes are held at the Bordentown Armory on the dates listed below from 1000-1200 Hours. You MUST register for this class since I only take 10 couples so we go over everything.
Please use our Registration Form to register and I will respond letting you know if you are confirmed.
Classes will be held on the following dates.
- 27 March 2026 (Class is full but I can contact you if there is a cancellation)
- 15 May 2026
- 7 August 2026
- 7 November 2026

Pay Issues
Reminder - if you file your retirement paperwork with me, I can assist you with HRC until it is sent to DFAS. DFAS will ONLY talk to the SOLDIER. They will not speak to me about any Soldier’s pay.
One question they will ask you is what is your retirement date? The answer is, your 60th Birthday - not when you got out of the Guard or Reserves. Their number is 800-321-1080. |
