School Bus Driver Requirements 70 years of Age and Older

Effective December 17, 2018, certain bus drivers holding a school bus (S) endorsement must submit, in addition to the Federal Medical Examiner’s Certificate, a New Jersey Medical Examination Form. Specifically:

a. Drivers who are 70 to 74 years of age must annually furnish evidence of continuing physical fitness by providing a medical examination form completed by a licensed medical doctor or osteopathic physician to their employers for review by the commission at the commission’s biannual (bus) inspection; and

b. Drivers who are 75 years of age or older must, every 6 months, furnish evidence of continuing physical fitness by providing a medical examination form completed by a licensed medical doctor or osteopathic physician to their employers for review by the commission at the commission’s biannual (bus) inspection.

School bus drivers who are 70 to 74 years of age must submit to the State examination described above.  Beginning in 2020, those bus drivers must then undergo this examination annually no later than June 1.   School bus drivers who are 75 years of age or older must submit to an initial State examination and subsequent one every 6 months.

The New Jersey Medical Examination Form and the Medical Advisory Criteria may be found at http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/pdf/business/NJDR-15.pdf

The Medical Doctor or Osteopathic Physician Evaluation page, located at the end of the New Jersey Medical Examination Form, must be submitted to the driver’s employer.

Do not submit it to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).

School bus drivers who do not comply with the required additional medical examination may be subject to the suspension of their privilege to operate a school bus.  Employers who fail to receive and maintain all required medical forms may be subject to a $250 fine.
