New Jersey Sex Offender Internet Registry

Guidelines


Please remember that this registry is only a preliminary screening tool, and the information by itself cannot ensure the safety of any individual. The following guidelines set forth some appropriate steps to take using the information about sex offenders provided through this registry:

  1. Sharing and discussing the information from the web site with those residing in your household, such as family members (click on the link "About Sex Offenders" for background information and educational materials about sex offenders).

  2. Sharing the information from the web site with those responsible for caring for children at your residence or within your organization.

  3. Remaining alert for the presence of any individual offenders in the vicinity of those under your care or supervision.

  4. Taking appropriate precautions to protect those at risk, based on the information provided (click on the link for "Personal Safety" for specific tips).

  5. Discussing with your children how to act and what to do when dealing with strangers (click on the link for "Personal Safety" for specific tips).

  6. Using the information responsibly, in a manner that will facilitate the safety and well-being of those in your care.

The following measures would constitute inappropriate uses of the information about sex offenders provided through this registry, and may result in court action or prosecution:

  1. Attempting to harm the offender or the offender's property, or attempting to harass the offender or make unsolicited, unwanted contact.

  2. Taking any action against the offender's family, household members or employer that may in any way harm or harass a person or property.

  3. Using registry information for the purpose of applying for, obtaining, or denying health insurance, insurance, loans, credit, education, scholarships or fellowships, benefits privileges or services provided by any business establishment (unless for a purpose consistent with the enhancement of public safety), or housing or accommodations.
