New Administration Building Opens; Public Meeting Room, Executive Offices Dedicated

It has been more than four years since Superstorm Sandy slammed into New Jersey, inflicting catastrophic and unparalleled damages, which in turn necessitated billions of dollars in repairs.  In the immediate aftermath of the storm, the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission was much like the rest of the state – devastated.  Our 140-acre plant, situated near the confluence of the Passaic River and Newark Bay, was entirely engulfed by flood waters during the course of the storm.

With one snip of a pair of oversized ceremonial scissors, the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission on Thursday officially reopened its new administration building and dedicated its Public Meeting Room and executive offices. It was a milestone in the agency’s recovery efforts.

The commissioners officially dedicated the meeting room in the memory of Donald Tucker, a Newark Councilman and State Assemblyman who died in 2005. Tucker was a PVSC Commissioner for more than 20 years (1985 to 2005). PVSC’s executive offices were dedicated to Robert Davenport, who served the commission for 33 years, first as a Commissioner (1972 to 1988), and then as its Deputy Executive Director (1988 to 1994) and Executive Director (1994 to 2000).

“Four years after the storm, PVSC is the model of recovery and resiliency.  Indeed, through hard work, unwavering determination, and collaborative vision, PVSC has come back stronger and more unified than ever before,” said PVSC Chairman Thomas Tucci, Jr. “This is a tribute to PVSC’s excellent employees, who have met significant challenges head-on and persevered. Meanwhile, my outstanding colleagues on PVSC’s Board of Commissioners have provided invaluable leadership as the agency continues to rebuild and modernize, while remaining extremely responsive to our contributing municipalities and ratepayers.  For this, the agency and I are indebted to Vice Chairman Lucianin and Commissioners Calabrese, Catuogno, Crump, Heck and Quintana.”

The ceremonial reopening drew a crowd of local dignitaries, among them the mayors of PVSC’s largest contributing municipalities, two members of the New Jersey Legislature, and several members of the Newark Municipal Council.
