Welcome to the homepage for the Office of the Chief Economist/Office of Revenue and Economic Analysis.
The Chief Economist is the chief advisor on economic matters to the Treasurer and also supports other State agencies. The OCE/OREA provides data, projections, and analyses for the Governor’s Budget Message, Budget in Brief, Citizen’s Tax Guide, the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the Appropriations Act, the Annual Tax Expenditure Report, the Statistics of Income Report, the Official Financial Statement, and numerous Fiscal Notes for the State Legislature.

The Office also produces technical memoranda and research reports for the Treasury Department and other State agencies and shares its economic commentaries with the public through its newsletter, New Jersey Economic Insights. It also conducts the Business Pulse survey that monitors business sentiment in the state and produces the Garden State Activity Index, which tracks key New Jersey economic indicators.

  • new New Jersey Economic Insights – issued May 2013
    We have seen some marked improvements in New Jersey’s economy in recent months. The state’s unemployment rate fell from 9.5 percent in January to 9.3 percent in February, 9.0 percent in March, and then to 8.7 percent in April.
  • Garden State Activity Index update – issued May 2013
    New Jersey’s economic growth has gotten noticeably stronger over the past year. This past April, the state’s economy reached an index level 3.0% higher than the level in April 2012.
