Update On 2009-2010 Deer Hunting RegulationsLegislation signed on May 4, 2009, by Governor Corzine amends NJSA 23:4-24. The new version of the law allows for the hunting of deer with bow and arrow on Sundays during any bow and arrow deer hunting season by properly licensed hunters on state Wildlife Management Areas and private property only. Hunting with a firearm or carrying a gun in the woods or fields or on the water on Sunday is still prohibited. State, county and federal park and refuge properties, as well as other public lands, remain closed to hunting on Sundays. A list of state Wildlife Management Areas is available on the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife website at www.njfishandwildlife.com/wmaland.htm. Regarding the use of crossbows during bow are arrow deer seasons, the division reminds hunters that proposed Game Code Amendments which allow crossbow use were published in the NJ Register on April 6. That began a 60-day public comment period which closes June 5, 2009. The Fish and Game Council considers public comment and then votes to accept or reject the proposed amendments. The final amendments become law after publication in the New Jersey register. See www.njfishandwildlife.com/codechange.htm for information on the process of amending the Game Code. Visit the DEP website to view the Notice of Rule Proposal which has a link to a copy of the proposal.
