Tuckahoe WMA Impoundments on Upper Township Side Closed Until Further Notice |
|
December 1, 2017
As of November 27, contractors are installing new water control structures on the impoundments on the Upper Township side of the Tuckahoe WMA (formerly MacNamara). To ensure public safety, these impoundments will be closed to all use, including waterfowl hunting, until further notice. It is unlikely that the impoundments will be reopened before midwinter. Gates located at the wood line and marsh edge will remain closed and locked. Pheasant hunting and stocking WILL NOT be affected by this closure other than that hunters will not be permitted to hunt pheasants along the impoundment dike.
Over the past several years, the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has worked cooperatively with Ducks Unlimited, Cape May County Dept. of Mosquito Control, and the NJDEP Green Acres Program, and obtained a one million dollar North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) grant. The NAWCA grant funds are being used to restore the functionality of the 70-year old migratory bird impoundments on the WMA.
