Public Invited to View and Comment on Design Concepts

TRENTON — On Saturday, May 11 at Liberty State Park, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection will host the third in its series of open house-style events focused on the LSP Revitalization Program. The open house will be focused on the planning of new amenities for the southern and waterfront areas of the park known as LSP-South, the second phase of the LSP Revitalization Program.

DEP Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette will deliver remarks in the concourse, located directly behind the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, before doors open to the main hall.

Open House Details:

The public will have an opportunity to view posters showing concepts for Phase 2, provide their comments and ask staff questions. In addition, attendees will be able to participate in several interactive tabletop exercises.

Prior to the open house, interested stakeholders are asked to take part in an online survey which asks various questions about the park’s southern area and waterfront: dep.nj.gov/revitalizelsp/comment/. The feedback received at the open house and through the survey will help guide development of the final master plan.

Background on the LSP-South and the Revitalization Program:

The LSP Revitalization Program will bring more than 100 acres of active recreational, arts, and cultural improvements to LSP’s perimeter and create a central park at its heart with world-class natural landscapes that build resilience to flooding and climate change while providing passive recreation and educational opportunities for the public.

Planning is now underway for LSP-South, the second phase of the Revitalization Program, which includes the southern and waterfront areas of the park. LSP-South will include multiple new outdoor public recreation opportunities, including a 50+ acre Southern Athletics Hub to complement the Northern Athletics Hub planned for LSP-North along Audrey Zapp Drive. Initial concepts include multipurpose fields, a track and field complex, a cricket field, court and racquet sports such as basketball and pickleball, and adventure sports, including skateboarding, among others.

Additionally, the LSP-South Master Plan will ensure connectivity between all aspects of the Revitalization Program including Phase 1A, the parks interior section, and Phase 1B, the parks northern area along the Audrey Zapp Drive corridor, as well as expand transportation opportunities to and within the park.

Liberty State Park Revitalization Program History:

Last May, Commissioner LaTourette advanced the Liberty State Park Revitalization Program with an initial open house event showcasing plans for Phase 1A – the cleanup and restoration of the long fenced-off interior area of the park. A groundbreaking ceremony for Phase 1A was later held in October alongside a second open house event focused on Phase 1B – Liberty State Park’s northern area and immediate active recreation, arts and culture improvements.
