Subcommittee Established 2024

In June 2024, the DRBC adopted a resolution to establish the Subcommittee on Source Water Protection, a subcommittee of the Water Management Advisory Committee (WMAC). The SSWP will report to the WMAC and will help define, elevate awareness of and develop strategies to address source water protection concerns for drinking water supplies in the Delaware River Basin.

Membership

  • Subcommittee membership is being formed; see Resolution 2024-5 (linked above) for the SSWP constitution. There will be six reserved members and an unlimited number of non-reserved memebrs, all whom represent drinking water utilities that obtain source water from the Delaware River Basin or the Delaware & Raritan Canal. SSWP Objectives

The primary objectives of the SSWP are to:

  • Provide a regional forum for knowledge sharing and dialogue, and to promote cooperation in addressing source water protection issues and best practices across the Basin.

  • Establish and maintain a regular dialogue among public drinking water suppliers and government agencies involved in source water protection within the Basin.

  • Coordinate with and support the Delaware Valley Early Warning System.

  • Advance to the Executive Director and the WMAC any recommendations that could require Commission action.

Other objectives include:

  • Identifying and examining regional source water protection concerns and priorities.

  • Coordinating or supporting source water and drinking water protection efforts that benefit multiple water systems.

  • Coordinating approaches for funding drinking water supply source protection programs and measures, as needed.

  • As appropriate, coordinating with other groups, including the Schuylkill Action Network, that are working to advance and implement source water and watershed protection projects and programs within the Delaware River Basin.
