2018 NJ Emergency Preparedness Events

September is National Preparedness Month, a reminder that we all must prepare ourselves and our families for emergencies now and throughout the year. The 2018 national theme is Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How. Click on your county below to learn more about events scheduled in your area. These will be updated throughout the month.

Atlantic
  • Information tables that include Emergency Preparedness, Register Ready enrollment and flu and handwashing materials  at various Back-to-School events (dates and times vary)

  • Emergency Preparedness presentations at senior centers that will include Register Ready enrollment information and focus on the importance of having a go kit stocked with medications. Medication boxes will also be distributed.

  • Community events include:
     
    • Sept. 23 - Green Day Festival in Hammonton from 12 to 4 p.m. 

    • Sept. 29 - Italian Festival at Smithville from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bergen

Emergency preparedness information pertaining to seniors and pets, and ways to create and practice families' emergency plans will be distributed at each of the following health fairs:

  • Sept. 22 - Demarest Town Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Sept. 23 - Fairlawn Flu Carnival (location/time TBD) 

  • Sept. 30 - Glen Rock Street Fair/Town Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

 

  • Sept. 12 - Emergency preparedness educational materials and survival blankets will be distributed to seniors from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Van Saun Park in Paramus (rain date Sept. 19)

Burlington
  • Rock hiding - The Burlington County Health Department will be painting rocks with emergency preparedness symbols and including a #BCprepares hashtag. Staff will strategically place them in well-known places throughout the county. Each week in September, staff will hide one rock and unveil clues about the hiding spot on Facebook. Whoever brings in the preparedness rock at the end of each week will receive a preparedness-related prize.
  • Pet preparedness video - The Burlington County Health Department is developing a video that will highlight steps that Burlington County residents can take to ensure their pets are safe in an emergency. Video will be featured on Facebook

The Camden County Department of Health & Human Services have the following events planned:

  • Sept. 8 - Go-Kit demonstration and health talk at Lighthouse Church in Lindenwold 

  • Sept. 15 - Emergency preparedness table at Virtua Community Day 

  • Sept. 22 and 23 - Emergency preparedness table at Camden County Fair

  • Sept. 29 - Emergency preparedness table at Williamstown Chamber of Commerce Health Expo

  • Sept. 1 - Educational materials will be distributed at a health fair at the Martin Luther King Center (207 W. Main St., Whitesboro, NJ 08252) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

  • Sept. 28 -  Educational materials will be distributed at a health fair at the Lighthouse Church (248 U.S. 9, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210). Time TBD. 

  • Preparedness information will be displayed on a bulletin board at the Cape May County Department of Health outside of the Family Planning Clinic (6 Moore Rd., Cape May Court House, NJ, 08210).

  • Medical Reserve Corps orientation class will be held at the Cape May County Department of Health (6 Moore Rd., Cape May Court House, NJ, 08210). Date and time TBD.

  • Sept. 26 - FREE Until Help Arrives training at Cumberland County College (3322 College Dr. Vineland, NJ 08362) in the Luciano Conference Center, Banquet Room from 9 a.m to 12 p.m. If someone is injured, the first few minutes are critical in helping their chances of surviving serious life-threatening injuries. Would you know how to help them until professional help arrives? The New Jersey Department of Health's Office of Emergency Management, through the University Hospital Center for Emergency Preparedness and Response, provides free FEMA-developed trainings around the state to teach people how to use simple and effective skills to save lives, effectively communicate with 9-1-1 operators, stop life-threatening bleeding, manage stress, position injured individuals and stay safe.

Essex
  • Sept. 6 - Free Until Help Arrives training at Essex County Sheriff's Office (560 Northfield Ave., West Orange, NJ 07052). The class will be held in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). There will be two sessions: the morning session is from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and evening session is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Life-threatening emergencies can happen fast. Emergency responders aren’t always nearby. You may be able to save a life by taking simple actions immediately.   • Sept. 27 - Free Bleeding Control Basic training at Verona Community Center (880 Bloomfield Ave. Verona). There will be two sessions on Sept. 27, morning session is from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and evening session is from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
    Bleeding control for the injured teaches participants the basic life-saving medical interventions, including bleeding control with a tourniquet, bleeding control with gauze packs or topical hemostatic agents, and opening an airway to allow a casualty to breathe. The course is designed for non-tactical law enforcement officers, firefighters, security personnel, teachers and other civilians requiring this basic training.

Please note: Hands-only CPR is a short training that is conducted in less than 5 minutes.

The Emergency Preparedness Division of the Salem County Department of Health and Human Services is offering free preparedness demonstrations and presentations.
