Nurse to Patient Staffing

At Hospitals

Patient safety is directly impacted by the availability of nursing care. To ensure adequate availability of nursing staff, New Jersey law requires hospitals and nursing homes to compile and report information on the number of staff involved in direct patient care.

In addition, hospitals must post staffing information in the facility daily, provide that staffing information when requested by the public, and report their staffing levels to the Department of Health every month.

At Nursing Homes

New Jersey law requires nursing homes and hospitals to report information on the number of staff involved in direct patient care and to publicly post that information within their facilities. They are further required to report daily staffing levels via a web-based system to the Department of Health. The Department makes this information available to the public on a quarterly basis.
