Know Your Illness

If you do become sick, educate yourself about the illness affecting you.

  • If you don’t understand what your doctor is telling you about your condition, ask for a clearer explanation.
  • Learn as much as you can about your condition. Your doctor and your local library can help.
  • Use caution when researching diseases online. Many unscrupulous people, including some identifying themselves as “doctors,” use the Internet to distribute unscientific, unverifiable information about diseases and illnesses. Often, their goal is to sell you a useless “miracle” supplement, diet regimen, or even a fraudulent "cure." Make sure the information you use comes from a trustworthy, reputable source.
  • Ask your doctor to tell you about all your treatment options. Ask about the potential risks and benefits of each one.
  • Consider seeking a second opinion from another physician.
