The 4th Annual Disability Parade and Celebration Raises Awareness
TRENTON Department of Human Services (DHS) Commissioner Jennifer Velez today addressed an enthusiastic crowd of more than 500 participants in the 4th Annual New Jersey Disability Pride Parade and Celebration in downtown Trenton. The Parade began at the New Jersey State House and ended with a post-parade celebration on East Lafayette Street.“This event brings us together in celebration of diversity,” said Commissioner Velez. “Each year, this event has grown, serving to increase awareness of New Jersey’s disability community and promoting the often unrecognized potential of each individual.”

Organized by the Alliance Center for Independence in Edison, one of 11 Independent Living Centers in the state dedicated to serving people with disabilities, this event brings together people and organizations from across New Jersey to celebrate with the disability community.

The event featured an Emergency Preparedness Pavilion, staffed by the DHS’ Division of Disability Services (DDS), information tables from a variety of organizations, as well as music and entertainment performed by people with disabilities.

“This event provides an opportunity for people with disabilities to join together in a celebration of disability as a natural part of life,” said DDS Director Joseph Amoroso. “Whether a disability is apparent in the early, or the later years of life, with the necessary supports, people with disabilities can live more independent lives and become contributing members of their communities.”

The DHS’ Division of Disability Services (DDS) is the Christie Administration’s point of entry for disability services and responds to as many as 15,000 requests annually for Information and Referral Assistance on issues affecting people with any type of disability in New Jersey. DDS works in partnership with other state agencies to provide assistance. The DDS toll free hotline is 1-888-285-3036 and more information can be found on the DDS website.
