February 5, 2016 is 13th Annual National Wear Red Day

Trenton, NJ – Raising awareness of the importance of heart health in women, First Lady Mary Pat Christie announced that Drumthwacket, the Governor’s Official residence in Princeton, will once again illuminate in red for the 13th annual Go Red for Women - National Wear Red Day on Friday evening, February 5, 2016. Cardiovascular disease is the number one health issue facing women today. In fact, an estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by heart disease.

“As we mark the 13th anniversary of the ‘Go Red’ initiative, we have a real opportunity to raise awareness in reducing the risk of heart disease in women and in helping our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends live longer, healthier lives,” said First Lady Mary Pat Christie. “So I encourage everyone to participate in the 2016 National Wear Red Day – whether you’re in a red shirt or dress or having your business ‘glow red’, we can all make a difference.”

Since the ‘Go Red ‘movement launched in 2004, more than 670,000 women’s lives have been saved through awareness and educational efforts. Today, 34% fewer American women are succumbing to heart disease and stroke.

Heart Disease Facts:

• Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, and is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined.
• Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
• Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease.
• While 1 in 31 American women dies from breast cancer each year, 1 in 3 dies of heart disease.
• Only 1 in 5 American women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat.
• Women comprise only 24 percent of participants in all heart-related studies.

Last year, nearly 1,800 New Jersey businesses, schools, towns, and organizations supported National Wear Red Day 2015.  In addition, Drumthwacket was one of more than 105 illuminated landmarks, buildings and properties throughout the Garden State.  Other participants included NJ PAC in Newark,  C.R. Bard, Inc. Global Headquarters in Murray Hill, Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, Community Medical Center in Toms River, Cooper University Hospital in Camden, Rutgers Werblin Recreation Center in New Brunswick and  Bracco Diagnostics in Monroe Township.
