Abraham Browning was born on July 26, 1808
in Camden, New Jersey. He received his early
education at the country schools in his home
town. After receiving his elementary education,
he attended the academy at Woodbury in Gloucester
County. He attended the renowned school of
John Gummere in Burlington, which was considered
one of the most valued educational establishments
in the state. Upon leaving school, he became
a student in the law office of the Honorable
Samuel L. Southard in 1830. He studied in
the law office for one year and then entered
the law school of Yale College. Browning was
admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1834 and,
immediately after, began the practice of law
in Camden.
