Troop D is comprised of two regions: the Parkway Region and the Turnpike Region.
The Parkway Region is responsible for The Garden State Parkway which extends 173 miles from the southern tip of New Jersey to the New York Thruway. The Garden State Parkway provides easy access to most shore areas in the state. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority owns and maintains the Garden State Parkway, which is the dominant roadway for access to Atlantic City and its casinos. The Garden State Parkway offers one of the most pleasant and picturesque panoramas in the eastern portion of the state, and transverses forty-nine municipalities and ten counties.
The Parkway Region also has police responsibility for events at the PNC Arts Center in Holmdel.
The Turnpike Region is responsible for the New Jersey Turnpike which consists of 148 miles, incorporating areas of four to twelve lanes. The New Jersey Turnpike, with a total of 1,194 lane-miles long is the nation's busiest, limited access non-stop toll road. Troop D Headquarters is located in Cranbury between Interchanges 8 and 8A at Milepost 71.5 in Cranbury Township. Virtually all highway traffic between the great seaports of New York and Philadelphia passes through New Jersey. In spite of this incredible volume of traffic, the New Jersey Turnpike has consistently been one of the safest major toll roads in the United States.
Troop D has a total of six stations: three in the Parkway Region and three in the Turnpike Region. The Parkway Region stations include Galloway, Holmdel and Bloomfield Station. The Turnpike Region stations include Moorestown, Cranbury and Newark Stations. These six stations are supplemented with Tactical Patrols Units. These high specialized tactical patrol units are assigned to high accident areas in each station area to reduce motor vehicle crashes, enhance police presence and visibility and increase traffic safety and enforcement.
Troop D has two Construction Incident Management Units (CIMU), in each region. These CIMU Units focus on the inspection and enforcement of all commercial vehicles, including buses, trucks, tractor trailers, etc. Additional responsibilities include New Jersey weights and measures enforcement, compliance reviews and roadside motorcoach inspections. In 2011, the Parkway Region opened the CIMU, Herbertsville bus and truck inspection facility. With four light bays and ventilated pits, this State of the Art facility will allow CIMU trained personnel to conduct full level 1 inspections of the buses and trucks that travel on the Garden State Parkway.
The New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway continue to make continual improvements to both roads to increase motorist safety and increase and improve traffic flow. The Troop D Construction Incident Management Unit, in both the Parkway and Turnpike regions, work in conjunction with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority to ensure contractors are complying with all safety protocols and to assist in the movement of traffic through construction areas as safety and as expeditiously as possible.
The Troop D Criminal Investigation Office has detectives positioned through the Parkway and Turnpike Regions. These detectives focus on preventing and detecting crime in the Parkway and Turnpike Service areas and commuter lots.
