En Noviembre del 2018, el Estado de Nueva Jersey implementó nuevas reglas para fortalecer la confianza entre los agentes del orden público y la comunidad de inmigrantes. Las reglas limitan el tipo de ayuda que el Estado de Nueva Jersey y los agentes del orden público locales puedan proporcionar a las autoridades federales de inmigración incluyendo al Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE).
Por ejemplo, bajo las nuevas reglas, un Policia Oficial de Nueva Jersey no puede parar, cuestionar, inspeccionar, arrestar, o detener a una persona simplemente porque el oficial piense que esa persona sea indocumentada. Además, la Policia no pueden preguntarle a uno sobre su estatus migratorio excepto si es un caso en el cual dicha información pueda ser pertinente a una investigación específicamente relacionada con un delito o un crimen.
Uno de los propósitos de esta nueva regla es para asegurar que todos los residentes de Nueva Jersey, incluyendo los inmigrantes, se sientan seguros y a salvo mientras estén interactuando con los oficiales locales y estatales. Estas reglas aseguran que toda víctima o testigo puedan reportar delitos o crímenes a las autoridades sin sentir miedo de ser entregados a las autoridades federales de inmigración.
