June 3, 2015 Barnegat Bay Blitz
Adds to Our Tradition of Success
DEP Commissioner Bob Martin, staff and the Barnegat Bay Blitz sponsors extend their sincerest thanks to all of the individuals, schools, municipalities, groups and businesses that participated in this spring's Barnegat Bay Blitz on June 3, 2015. Since Governor Christie's action plan for Barnegat Bay was announced in 2010, six successful Blitz cleanups have been conducted, resulting in the collection of thousands of pounds of litter.
This spring's Barnegat Bay Blitz occurred on an unusually cool Wednesday and attracted close to 4,000 volunteers who participated in clean-ups at 100 locations throughout the Barnegat Bay Watershed. Blitz highlights include:
- Close to 4,500 Volunteers
- About 1,200 bags of garbage/recycling
- 250 cubic yards of debris filling 8 dumpsters
- Commissioner Martin visited the Sedge Island Conservation Zone and met with scientists and MATES students who presented their research
In 2014-15 DEP sponsored the 2nd annual Barnegat Bay Blitz Rain Barrel Challenge. The Rain Barrel Challenge is a competition that engages schools and youth groups located in the Barnegat Bay watershed to learn about the bay and how people can help protect its water quality and natural resources. The students investigate the theme of the Challenge then work together to design rain barrels that address the theme.
