Preventing Disaster Recovery Fraud

New Jerseyans have shown great resilience and generosity towards each other in the aftermath of natural disasters such as Hurricane Ida and Superstorm Sandy. However, natural disasters are known to attract their share of con artists and frauds. The State of New Jersey is committed to preventing fraudulent activity, theft, waste, bribes/kickbacks and unethical/illegal conduct as we continue to recover and rebuild.

If you believe you are a victim of fraud, or have information about alleged fraud committed in the wake of Hurricane Ida or Superstorm Sandy, please contact the Office of the State Comptroller: (1-855-OSC-TIPS (1-855-672-8477) or comptrollertips@osc.state.nj.us).

Other Key Tips

  • Obtain a written contract that specifies exactly what you are paying for.
  • If you can’t get a straight answer from a contractor, take your business elsewhere.
  • Be wary of contractors who insist on a large up-front payment.
  • Beware of any contractor who offers unsolicited services such as knocking on your door and saying he was “just in the neighborhood” and can give you a good deal.
