Statement from Director Rue Following the Termination of DOJ's Investigation into Trenton Police Practices
"The New Jersey Office of the Public Defender is deeply troubled by the U.S. Department of Justice’s decision to abruptly end its investigation into long-standing patterns of unconstitutional policing by the Trenton Police Department.
Our agency represents people directly impacted by the civil rights and Fourth Amendment violations detailed in the DOJ’s 2024 report: excessive use of force, unlawful searches, and illegal arrests. Walking away from the proposed reforms denies justice to those harmed by TPD and lets the officers named in the report avoid accountability.
Despite the DOJ’s decision, NJOPD remains dedicated to the pursuit of accountability and transparency in cases of alleged police misconduct and to upholding constitutional rights in Trenton and beyond."
