2006-07 Pheasant and Quail Stocking Information

November 8, 2006

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish and Wildlife will begin stocking pheasant and quail on November 10 in preparation for the 2006-07 hunting season. Birds will be released on 25 wildlife management areas (WMAs), as well as the Fort Dix Military Reservation and Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Stocking will continue through December 30 with a total release of 55,000 pheasants and 5,200 quail.

Opening Day of the pheasant and quail season is Saturday, November 11.

Pheasants are raised at the Division of Fish and Wildlife’s historic Rockport Pheasant Farm in Mansfield, Warren County, while quail will be purchased from a private facility. Pheasant and quail stocked for hunting are paid for by sportsmen and women through the purchase of a Pheasant and Quail stamp.

The New Jersey Fish and Game Council has again approved the release of the entire Pheasant and Quail stocking schedule for the 2006-2007 hunting season. The number of pheasants and quail stocked each day is available to all hunters on the Division’s Web site, linked below as well as from the Small Game Hunting page or by calling 609-259-2132.

This year, the Fort Dix Military Reservation has again lifted its stringent security ban and will allow pheasants to be stocked for hunting on November 14, 16, 21, 28, 30 and December 21.

A total of 5,200 quail will be stocked on the Greenwood Forest and Peaslee WMAs. Each area will receive 2,600 birds distributed up to Thanksgiving Day weekend. After the holiday weekend and until the end of the stocking season, a total of 2,000 pheasants will be stocked on the Greenwood and Peaslee WMAs (1,000 birds on each).

The Division reminds sportsmen and women that the pheasant and quail stocking list is tentative and may change due to inclement weather. Also, individuals hunting for pheasant and quail on stocked WMAs must possess a New Jersey Pheasant and Quail Stamp in addition to a valid firearm hunting license.
