Streamlined Portfolio Appeals Option
As part of the Third Pathway — Graduation Portfolio Appeal, the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) offers a streamlined portfolio appeals option for students who meet specific criteria through a qualifying ASVAB score.
Districts may use this option in conjunction with the existing portfolio appeals process to support students in demonstrating graduation readiness in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics.
Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)
Eligibility
Students who meet or exceed the minimum required ASVAB composite score of 35 qualify for the streamlined portfolio appeal option to demonstrate graduation readiness.
For eligible students, the streamlined option reduces the number of required constructed-response tasks (CRTs) as compared with the standard portfolio appeals process, while maintaining documentation expectations for ELA and mathematics.
Documentation Expectations
For each student using the ASVAB streamlined option, the district must:
- Maintain documentation of the qualifying ASVAB composite score in the student’s local portfolio appeal file.
- Clearly indicate in the student’s Education Proficiency Plan (EPP) that the streamlined portfolio appeal option based on ASVAB is being used, consistent with current portfolio appeals guidance.
