Pathways for CTE Teachers: Alternate Route Program

The Career and Technical Educator (CTE) alternate route program is designed for those who have not completed a formal teacher preparation program at an accredited college or university but wish to become a New Jersey certified teacher. Alternate route teachers earn a Certificate of Eligibility (CE). Applicants may use a degree in the occupational area of the endorsement, coursework, employment experience, self-employment experience, or a combination of education and employment experience to meet the requirements for the CE.

Individuals holding a CE are eligible to be hired to teach the subject area identified in their endorsement in grades 9 to 12 in any New Jersey comprehensive school district, county vocational-technical school district, special services school district, charter school, or NJDOE-approved private school for students with disabilities.
