Purpose: The Charter Schools Grant Program-Implementation1 FY17 is a federally-funded grant program designed to support charter schools who received final approval in July 2016 to open in September 2016. Through the increase in the number of seats in high quality charter schools, more students will have increased educational opportunities and will be better positioned to master the educational requirements of the Common Core State Standards as well as the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards. Funds may be used for post-award planning and design of the educational program and for costs associated with the initial implementation of the charter school. This limited competitive grant program is open to charter schools that received final approval for a charter from the Commissioner of Education in July, 2016 and who have not received federal charter school planning funds; and who are expected to open in September 2016. The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) has established a grant program using federal Charter School Grant Program funds during its second no-cost extension period. Based on the availability of federal resources, this grant program will begin October 1, 2016 and end on January 31, 2017.
