The New Jersey National Guard Youth Summer Camp: Celebrating 31 Years of Tradition, Growth, and Impact

After 31 years in operation, the New Jersey National Guard Child & Youth Summer Camp stands as a proud tradition that began in 1994. Over the decades, it has grown into a vibrant and dynamic program, offering military dependents a week-long experience filled with camaraderie, adventure, and personal development.

Originally created to bring together children of military families, the camp has evolved into something much more than just summer fun—it has become a cornerstone of support, resilience, and leadership for over 100 youth each year. Through its unique structure and military-inspired values, the camp creates an environment where children and teens not only have fun but also build life-long skills and friendships.

Structure & Activities

Campers are grouped into six companies—Alpha through Foxtrot—where they experience a week full of exciting and meaningful activities. Each company operates as a team, fostering unity and a strong sense of identity. The daily schedule is packed with engaging events, including:

  • Morning physical training (PT) and a PT test to promote fitness and discipline
  • Archery, sports competitions, and arts & crafts for skill development and creativity
  • Trips to the beach for relaxation and expression
  • A memorable camp dance to end the week on a high note

Throughout the week, companies compete for coveted awards such as Best Cadence, Best Marching, Cleanest Barracks, and Most Improved Company—encouraging both team pride and individual responsibility.

Foxtrot Company – Counselors in Training (CITs)

For youth ages 14–15, the camp offers a specialized leadership development program called Foxtrot Company, also known as CITs (Counselors in Training). These young leaders-in-the-making spend the week learning how to become future counselors, developing critical leadership and mentorship skills. The CIT program is a transformative experience designed to instill the values of accountability, confidence, and service to others.

Building the Future: Core Values & Lasting Impact

The New Jersey National Guard Youth Camp is more than just summer recreation—it’s a launching pad for young people to grow into strong, independent, and resilient individuals. Campers walk away with more than memories; they gain life skills in:

  • Teamwork and collaboration
  • Leadership and responsibility
  • Commitment and integrity
  • Independence and self-reliance
  • Emotional resilience and adaptability

Whether it's their first summer or their 30th, every camper becomes part of a larger family that values service, community, and growth. As it celebrates over three decades of excellence, the New Jersey National Guard Child & Youth Summer Camp remains a vital experience that empowers the next generation of military-connected youth—honoring their families' service while preparing them for a bright and resilient future.

The Heart of the Camp: Our Dedicated Volunteer Staff

Behind every unforgettable experience at the New Jersey National Guard Child & Youth Summer Camp is a team of extraordinary individuals who make it all possible: our volunteer staff. These dedicated men and women give their time, energy, and passion each summer—not for recognition or compensation, but for the chance to make a difference in the lives of military youth.

The staff is made up of a diverse and highly capable group of active-duty soldiers, reservists, retired veterans, military spouses, and dependents. Each person brings unique strengths and perspectives, but all share a common goal: to create a safe, structured, and inspiring environment where campers can grow, connect, and thrive.

These volunteers take on a wide range of essential roles—from running activities and leading company formations, to managing logistics, administering medical care, and mentoring the camper’s day and night. They ensure that every child is safe, accounted for, and fully engaged throughout the week, often working long hours behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly.

For over 30 years, their tireless dedication has been the backbone of this program. They are mentors, role models, and leaders, committed to upholding the values of service, respect, and excellence. Many have returned year after year, becoming a consistent and trusted presence in the lives of campers and fellow staff alike.

To these volunteers, camp is more than just a week of service—it's a mission. A calling. An opportunity to invest in the next generation of leaders.

We cannot thank them enough for their unwavering support, selflessness, and service. Their commitment to this camp and its mission is what has made it thrive for over three decades. Without them, this program would not be possible.
