N.J. Division of Taxation Postpones Deadlines for Hurricane Florence Victims

TRENTON — The New Jersey Division of Taxation postponed tax filing and payment deadlines for taxpayers affected by Hurricane Florence, State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio announced today.

Affected taxpayers include businesses and individuals located in the disaster areas, those whose tax records are in the disaster areas, and relief workers. The Division is following federal tax relief guidelines for Hurricane victims that were announced by the IRS on Sept. 15, 2018.

Taxpayers affected by Hurricane Florence now have until Jan. 31, 2019 to file their New Jersey tax returns or make payments on taxes that had an original or extended due date between Sept. 7, 2018 and Jan. 31, 2019. If the IRS further extends the filing deadline for federal tax purposes, the deadline for New Jersey returns and payments will also be extended.

“We’ve seen firsthand the terrible toll that these storms can take,” said Treasurer Muoio. “As such, we’re going to mirror the IRS extension and offer some measure of relief to the people recovering from the storm and the workers helping them get back on their feet.”

Taxpayers that have their deadlines extended can apply for interest and penalty abatement on underpaid tax that would otherwise accrue for the period of the postponement. Individuals looking for more information concerning the tax relief or penalty and interest abatement should call the N.J. Division of Taxation Customer Service Center at 609-292-6400.
