To help maintain our transportation process and network and ensure public safety, permits may be required to build new access to state roadways, to drive overweight vehicles, to advertise on roadways, and to take flight throughout New Jersey.

Major Access Permits

Major Access Permits



Major Access Permits allow the construction, maintenance, closure, and use of a driveway or street that provides State highway access. This might include a lot, site, lot subdivision or lot consolidation along the State highway system. The expected two-way traffic volume is 500 or more daily trips between it and State highway.

Highway Occupancy Permits

Highway occupancy permits allow work to be completed within State roadways and/or NJDOT right-of-way. Even if the work temporarily impacts NJDOT property a highway occupancy permit is required.

Minor Access Permits

Minor Access Permits



Minor access permits allow property owners to open, close, repair, or replace driveways along State roadways. These permits are geared toward smaller properties that will accommodate less than 500 cars per day.

Superload Program

Superload Program



The Superload Program provides permits to Oversized/Overweight (OS/OW) trucks on state owned roadways and provides Ocean borne permits to overseas containers. The NJDOT Gotpermits Permitting System allows carriers to apply for truck permits online.

Aeronautical Permits

Aeronautical Permits
(Drones,Planes,Airports)



The Bureau of Aeronautics issues licenses to public use airports and restricted use airstrips, heliports, helistops, balloonspots ultralight recreational facilities and parachute drop zones. In addition, it issues permanent and temporary licenses for aeronautical activities.

Outdoor Advertising Services

Outdoor Advertising

(Permits & Licenses)



The Bureau of Outdoor Advertising Services issues permits for outdoor advertising signs along all roads and highways in New Jersey. An outdoor advertising license is required if a sign is used to advertise something other than the business of the permit holder.
