Wittpenn Bridge Replacement

Project description:
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is addressing a major chokepoint by replacing the existing Wittpenn with a new vertical-lift bridge on a new alignment. The project includes replacing the bridge's ten-foot travel lanes with 12-foot wide lanes.

Location:
Kearny and Jersey City in Hudson County

Transportation modes:
Trucks, Ships

The Wittpenn Bridge's role in the Liberty Corridor improves mobility and access to and from port terminals along critical freight corridors, and to brownfields and underutilized properties.

Related to economic development, the Wittpenn Bridge:

  • improves connectivity to underutilized brownfield sites, including the Koppers Coke, Standard Chlorine and Diamond Shamrock properties.
  • optimizes our existing transportation system by addressing chokepoints.

Innovative aspects of the Wittpenn Bridge involve the design to current standards to accommodate increased truck and vehicle traffic.
