New Jersey Highlands Water Protection and Planning Council

The Town of Boonton is a small suburban community in northeastern Morris County.  With a rich cultural resource base, the town boasts six officially recognized historic districts, which together comprise about 434 acres, or 27% of the town’s land area. The Rockaway River crosses from the western edge of the town southeast toward Boonton Reservoir. The town enjoys two commercial corridors along both Main Street and Myrtle Avenue, and is served by two major bus routes and the NJ Transit Montclair-Boonton Line with regular commuter service to neighboring towns and New York City. Interstate 287and US Route 202 bisect the town from south to north.

RMP Consistency Review

The Town of Boonton has requested a review of its local planning and regulatory documents for alignment with the Highlands Regional Master Plan (RMP).  The staff Consistency Review and Recommendations Report below provides an analysis of this review. A public comment period was held from April 21 through May 21, 2026. A summary of comments and Highlands Council staff responses will be included in a final report that will be posted here prior to formal Council action on this petition.
