Questions for Consideration Regarding AI Systems in Education

Local Education Agency (LEA) Leaders

It is important that LEAs begin dialogues with local educational stakeholders around the incorporation of AI systems into the classroom. The following are high-level starter questions for LEA leaders to consider for these conversations:

  • Has the LEA convened an internal team to review district policies review their district policies (technology use, academic integrity, etc.) for adequacy in addressing potential matters involving AI?
  • What guidelines around acceptable and unacceptable use policy of AI systems for students, educators, and stakeholders should the LEA provide?
  • What professional development or learning is needed for educators around AI?
  • How can schools use AI systems to support student learning?
  • How can schools prepare students with the skills to thrive in an AI infused world?
  • How can AI systems support educators to maximize instructional time with students?

Classroom Educators

Alongside LEA-level conversations around AI, classroom educators should also consider key questions when evaluating the use of AI systems in their classrooms. The following are some questions educators may consider when making decisions regarding the use of AI systems in their classrooms:

  • How can this AI system enhance teaching and learning in my classroom?
  • Does the AI system have any limitations or potential biases I should be aware of?
  • How will I ensure the AI system is used responsibly and ethically, protecting student data and privacy?
  • How will I assess the impact and value of the AI system on student outcomes? What feedback will I gather?
  • How can I involve students and parents/guardians in conversations about the benefits and risks of AI in the classroom?
  • What LEA-level guidance has been provided around acceptable and unacceptable uses of AI in the classroom?
