Governor Murphy Directs the Lowering of U.S. and New Jersey Flags in Honor of Navy Veteran Harold Costill

TRENTON – Today, Governor Phil Murphy signed Executive Order No. 85, ordering U.S. and New Jersey flags to fly at half-staff on Monday, September 16, 2019, to honor the life of U.S. Navy veteran Harold Kendall “Bud” Costill. Fireman 3rd Class Costill was killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, but his remains were only identified in June of this year, 78 years after his death. Costill was a native of Clayton, New Jersey, and has finally returned home and will be laid to rest at a funeral tomorrow, on Saturday, September 14.

“Fireman 3rd Class Costill gave his life in defense of our nation during the attack on Pearl Harbor, at the age of only 18,” said Governor Murphy. “Along with many who perished on that day, he remained unidentified until only recently. With the return of his remains, his family will now get the closure that they so deeply deserve. We will never forget his sacrifice and will forever be grateful to all veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend and protect our nation.”
