New Jersey Department of Labor and Office of the Attorney General Partner with GameStop to Promote Employee Awareness of the State’s Earned Sick Leave Law

TRENTON – The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL) and the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General (OAG) today announced an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance (AVC) with video game retailer GameStop, Inc., in a collaborative effort to raise awareness of New Jersey’s Earned Sick Leave Law (ESLL) among the retailer’s New Jersey employees.
The agreement underscores GameStop’s commitment to complying with New Jersey’s labor laws to improve its Garden State workers’ knowledge of their right to paid sick time to care for themselves or their loved ones under the state’s robust labor laws.
“We are excited to join the Office of the Attorney General and GameStop as partners in this voluntary agreement that will help to raise awareness of New Jersey’s earned sick leave benefits for GameStop employees across the Garden State,” said Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo. “This private-public partnership empowers GameStop team members and strengthens New Jersey families by educating workers on the earned sick leave they are entitled to when they need it the most.”
“Retail workers should not have to choose between their health and their jobs,” said Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin. “Under New Jersey’s Earned Sick Leave Law, workers don’t have to endure a waiting period before earning sick leave time. And they don’t have to carry the burden of finding a replacement for when they are out sick. I’m glad that GameStop is taking additional steps to ensure full compliance with the law.”
NJDOL and GameStop are working to enhance transparency and access to the state’s earned sick leave for GameStop employees in New Jersey by promoting employee awareness of their work rights through a statewide communication plan that includes:
- Physical Notices: Clearly visible posters detailing the ESLL policy that will be on display in every GameStop store in New Jersey.
- Digital Communication: Notifications about the ESLL policy that will be promoted and available on GameStop’s intranet to ensure that all New Jersey employees have easy access to this critical information.
- Manager Training: All GameStop store and district managers will participate in mandatory training sessions to help them fully understand and better implement ESLL policies effectively.
This collaborative effort is a model of how private-public partnerships can foster a more balanced and fairer workforce by reinforcing the state law to protect the rights of New Jersey workers.
