Routes 1&9 southbound overnight lane closures
Traffic shift needed to start
Haynes Avenue improvements
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the overnight weekend closure of one lane on Routes 1&9 south local between Haynes Avenue and the Anheuser-Bush entrance ramp for the start of an improvement project in Essex County.
Beginning at 10 p.m. tonight Friday, November 18, until 5:00 a.m. Saturday, November 19, NJDOT’s contractor Anselmi and Decicco, Inc., will close one lane on Routes 1&9 south local, near the Haynes Avenue exit for the installation of temporary traffic barrels.
From 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday, November 21 and again on Tuesday, November 22, NJDOT’s contractor will close one lane on Routes 1&9 south local to replace the temporary traffic barrels a construction barrier.
One lane will remain open at all times during the installations.
The barrier will establish a new temporary work zone on the left side of Routes 1&9 southbound local. Once the barrier is in place, restriping will establish a traffic shift utilizing an existing shoulder to create two temporary lanes on the right side of the local lanes during this initial stage of construction. Motorists may notice a shoulder lane closure on the I-78 eastbound Exit 57 ramp to Route 1&9 southbound. This first stage of construction is expected to remain in place until spring 2017. Routes 1&9 southbound express lanes will not be affected.
The $14.2 million federally-funded Routes 1&9/Haynes Avenue operational improvements project is designed to improve safety and traffic flow by constructing a new roundabout at the intersection of Routes 1&9 southbound, Haynes Avenue, and Bessemer Street, adding a third lane and shoulder between the Haynes Avenue exit ramp and the Anheuser-Bush entrance ramp, a realignment of the Routes 1&9 southbound ramps, and new pavement on the roadways in the area. The project is being accomplished in stages, and is expected to be completed in summer 2018.
Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. Any traffic detours associated with this project will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadways will be reopened accordingly.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
