The Departmental Research Review Board (DRRB) reviews all research requests submitted to the New Jersey Department of Corrections and monitors all approved research projects for compliance to all NJDOC policies, procedures, administrative rules, and directives as well as all state and federal guidelines related to research. The New Jersey Department of Corrections encourages research that will advance the Department’s mission and goals.
Preparing a proposal
Prior to submitting the Research Application Package (RAP) researchers should first review the NJDOC policies and procedures related to research (ADM.001.007 and ADM.001.RES.001). It is also strongly encouraged that researchers reach out to the DRRB at DOC_RESEARCH@doc.nj.gov to discuss their proposal prior to sending in their submission.
Review Process
Once the RAP has been emailed to DOC_RESEARCH@doc.nj.gov, it will be assigned a DRRB tracking number, researchers should include this tracking number on all communications moving forward. The RAP will be reviewed by staff from the Research Evaluation and Administration Unit to ensure they adhere to all the submission requirements.
The DRRB reviews the RAPs on a rolling basis and provides their recommendation to the Commissioner. After the DRRB has reviewed the RAP it is then forwarded to selected members of the Executive Staff for their review and recommendations.
After reviewing the RAP and the recommendations from Executive Staff and the DRRB, the Commissioner will decide if the research will be permitted.
There is no expedited review and the review process can take a minimum of six (6) weeks.
