Housing Resource Fair to Be Held in Newark on February 23 to Help People Affected by Superstorm Sandy Access Available Housing Resources

TRENTON, NJ – The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) today announced a free Housing Resource Fair will be held Thursday, February 23, 2017, in Newark, Essex County, to provide Sandy-impacted residents with information about helpful housing resources. While applications for grant funds and housing vouchers are no longer being accepted, resources such as housing counseling, utility assistance, and housing search help are still available.

The Housing Resource Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Rock Christian Fellowship, 483 Ferry Street, Newark. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with housing counselors, developers/landlords and other support services. The fair is open to Sandy-impacted residents from anywhere in New Jersey.

“People affected by Superstorm Sandy who continue to need assistance are encouraged to attend the upcoming Housing Resource Fair,” said DCA Commissioner Charles A. Richman. “Knowledgeable staff from a wide range of organizations will be present in one place to answer questions, address concerns and guide people to available resources.”

Representatives from community development corporations, affordable housing properties, supportive services organizations, non-profit groups, local government and state government will be in attendance.

Housing Counselors from the Sandy Recovery Housing Counseling Program will also be present to offer attendees free HUD-certified housing counseling services for a wide array of housing-related issues, including foreclosure prevention, mortgages, budgeting, and rental guidance.

DCA is hosting the Housing Resource Fair in partnership with the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (HMFA) and the Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey. Representatives of DCA, HMFA and the Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey will be in attendance at the Housing Resource Fair.

This is the eighth such Housing Resource Fair for Sandy-impacted residents to be held. Fairs were previously held in Atlantic City, Atlantic County; Jersey City, Hudson County; Highlands, Monmouth County; Toms River, Ocean County; Cape May Court House, Cape May County; Little Ferry, Bergen County; and Sayreville, Middlesex County. DCA is holding the Housing Resource Fairs in those counties the federal government determined were most impacted by Sandy (Atlantic, Bergen, Cape May, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Union). Information about upcoming Housing Resource Fairs will be provided as they are scheduled.
