TRENTON, N.J. —The New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (HMFA), the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority today announced the winners of the 2014 Excellence in Housing and Economic Development Awards, which are presented to the most outstanding housing and economic development projects and partnerships throughout New Jersey. The state award program celebrates the best in housing revitalization, public-private economic development partnerships, and supportive housing developments that strengthen the vitality of our communities, contribute to economic growth, and demonstrate the potential to have a lasting impact. The winners will receive their awards at the 2014 Governor’s Conference on Housing and Economic Development, which will take place on September 22-23, 2014 in Atlantic City.
“We congratulate the winners of the 2014 Excellence in Housing and Economic Development Awards, who were selected from a large pool of competitive nominations,” said New Jersey Department of Community Affairs Commissioner Richard E. Constable, III, who also serves as Chairman of the HMFA. “They are excellent role models of affordable and supportive housing, and economic development partnerships from across the state, which add value to our communities.”

Leading Housing Revitalization Award (Rental)
Winner: Dr. Walter G. Alexander Village, Phases I and II, Orange
Redeveloping obsolete public housing into vibrant transit-oriented development, transforming the community
Leading Housing Revitalization Award (Homeownership)
Winner: Manitou Park Neighborhood Revitalization, Berkeley
Improving housing stock, providing critical infrastructure improvements, and anchoring the community through stable homeownership
Leading Public-Private Economic Development Partnership Award (2 winners)
Winner: Landis MarketPlace, Vineland
Creating a downtown tourist destination and meeting regional market demand for specialty foods
Winner: Kula Café, Asbury Park
Providing critical job training for underprivileged youth, improving lives and renewing hope
Leading Supportive Housing Development through Creative Partnerships Award
Winner: Van Sciver Supportive Housing, Closter
Providing housing and supportive services for individuals with special needs that are well-integrated into the community, improving the quality of life and independence of residents
“We are so pleased to honor these projects with the Excellence in Housing and Economic Development Awards,” said HMFA Executive Director Anthony L. Marchetta. “The winning projects, which are all collaborative efforts of both private and public entities, help stabilize families and neighborhoods and create economic mobility.”
The ceremony honoring the five Excellence in Housing and Economic Development Award winners will be held Tuesday, September 23rd at 10:45 a.m. at the Atlantic City Convention Center, 1 Convention Boulevard, Atlantic City, NJ 08401.
HMFA, an affiliate of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) provides financing for workforce homeownership and affordable rental opportunities for New Jersey residents and administers the federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) Program for New Jersey.
