NJDOT completes improvements to Route 46 and Clinton Road/Plymouth Street

(Trenton)- New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced the substantial completion of the Department’s $5.9 million Route 46 and Clinton Road intersection improvement project in Fairfield Township and Montville Township, Morris County.

As of Friday morning, May 2 the project will be substantially completed with all major roadway work finished. This intersection reconstruction project, which began in June 2006, will improve safety through the elimination of motorist conflict points and backups along both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Route 46 through numerous upgrades. A 15-foot wide deceleration lane from Route 46 eastbound to Clinton Road has been shifted to the south to provide greater capacity for the queuing vehicles at the Clinton Road intersection with Route 46.

NJDOT has replaced the crisscross ramp configuration from Route 46 westbound to Clinton Road with a relocated westbound connection to Clinton Road via Madison Road. The lane configurations on Plymouth Street and Clinton Road have been changed to improve traffic congestion and roadway service.

In addition, three new traffic signals have been installed to provide improved traffic flow through the intersection. These signals are located at:
• Plymouth Street and Madison Road
• Eastbound exit ramp and Clinton Road
• Route 46 and Clinton Road/ Plymouth Street (replaces existing signal).

“These critical safety and congestion improvements serve as an investment in the future of this vital stretch of Route 46,” said Kolluri.
