NJDOT to begin Route 57 culvert replacement project in Washington Borough, Warren County

(Trenton)–Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) on Friday, May 16, 2008 will begin a project to widen Route 57 and replace the existing culvert underneath the roadway in Washington Borough, Warren County.

In order to perform utility work, NJDOT will alternate traffic on Route 57 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. for approximately two weeks starting Friday, May 16.

On or about May 31, all traffic will be shifted to the eastbound lanes of Route 57 in order to begin work on Route 57 westbound. Two 11-foot travel lanes will be maintained on Route 57 at all times. Temporary traffic striping and pre-cast barrier will be installed on the roadway to mark the new traffic pattern.

The $1.5 million project will replace the existing culvert under Route 57 with multiple culverts to help mitigate flooding along this stretch of the highway. NJDOT also will widen the roadway to accommodate one 12-foot lane and one 6-foot shoulder in each direction and a sidewalk along the north side of Route 57 between Terrace Avenue and Ramapo Way. The sidewalk will improve the safety of pedestrians, especially children who walk to school in the area.
