NJDOT to resurface
Route 1 and Ford Avenue in Edison and Woodbridge

Route 1 corridor improvement project advances

(Trenton)- Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will resurface Route 1 northbound and Ford Avenue in Edison and Woodbridge. The resurfacing work is part of a $55 million project to widen and improve Route 1 from north of Route 287 to south of the Garden State Parkway.

“The rehabilitation of the Route 1 and Ford Avenue intersection is an important step in the improvement of the Route 1 corridor,” said Commissioner Kolluri. “Investing in the rehabilitation and widening of Route 1 will improve the quality of life and mobility of the residents who live near and travel on this vital roadway.”

Starting Monday, June 23, NJDOT will temporarily close Route 1 northbound lanes betweeen Menlo Avenue and the Garden State Parkway from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. A minimum of one lane of traffic will remain open at all times.

From Monday, June 23 to Thursday, June 26, the southbound Garden State Parkway ramp to Route 1 northbound will be closed from midnight to 5 a.m. During the closure, motorists will take Route 1 southbound to Ford Avenue, where they can make a U-turn onto Route 1 northbound.

From Monday, June 23 to Friday, June 27, Ford Avenue will be closed for milling and paving from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Motorists traveling from Route 1 southbound to Ford Avenue eastbound will be detoured from Route 1 southbound to Parsonage Road to Menlo Avenue to North Lafayette to Ford Avenue eastbound.

During the closure, traffic on Ford Avenue westbound bound for Route 1 will be detoured. These motorists will take North Lafayette to Menlo Avenue to Route 1 northbound. Traffic bound for southbound Route 1 will continue on Route 1 northbound to Gill Lane and make a U-turn.

On Saturday, June 28, the southbound Garden State Parkway ramp to Route 1 northbound will close intermittently between 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.

Starting June 28 at 8 a.m., Route 1 northbound will be shifted to the right from Menlo Avenue to the Garden State Parkway.

As part of the Route 1 improvement project, NJDOT also built new ramps to and from the roadway. On June 28, NJDOT will open the new ramps from Route 1 northbound to Ford Avenue, from Ford Avenue eastbound to Lafayette Road, and from Menlo Avenue to Route 1 northbound. The Ford Avenue southbound ramps will be completed in June 2009.

The entire project is slated for completion in August 2009.
