NJDOT announces traffic shift
on Route 49 Cohansey River Bridge

$14 million bridge replacement project advances

(Trenton)– The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced an upcoming traffic shift on the Route 49 Cohansey River Bridge in Cumberland County.

On October 17, traffic will shift from the northern side of the roadway to the newly constructed southern side of the roadway. NJDOT will maintain one lane of traffic in each direction.

“The Route 49 Cohansey River Bridge project reflects the State of New Jersey’s commitment to repair our bridges,” said Governor Corzine. “The new bridge will improve the quality of life of Cumberland County residents and benefit seasonal shore traffic.”

The traffic shift will enable NJDOT to continue to replace the Route 49 Cohansey River Bridge and its approaches. In addition, NJDOT will widen the travel lanes, improve traffic signals and roadway lighting, replace the mainline roadway drainage system and install new sidewalks and pedestrian crosswalks. Construction is scheduled for completion in April 2009.

NJDOT has installed variable messaging signs and other signage throughout the area to inform motorists of traffic changes. Construction information and real-time traffic updates are available at www.511nj.org.
