NJDOT designates municipalities
for Red Light Running Camera program

(Trenton)– The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the first three municipalities designated for the Red Light Running Automated Enforcement pilot program. Brick Township in Ocean County, East Brunswick in Middlesex County and the City of Newark in Essex County will participate in the pilot program.

“The Red Light Running Camera program is designed to help New Jersey communities supplement their traditional law enforcement resources,” noted Governor Jon S. Corzine. “The installation of these cameras will hopefully deter speeders and increase safety for motorists in Brick, East Brunswick and Newark.”

Each of the selected municipalities includes specific locations that have a demonstrated history of violations and accidents related to red light running that has not been reduced by previous engineering, enforcement and education efforts. The pilot program is designed to determine whether a traffic control signal monitoring system may be an effective long-term tool to increase safety at these locations. Each municipality will set up its own distribution system for citations that result from camera images.

In January, Governor Jon S. Corzine enacted Assembly Bill 4314, establishing a five-year pilot program to determine the effectiveness of the installation and utilization of traffic control signal monitoring systems. Under the program, a traffic control signal monitoring system utilizes cameras and vehicle sensors, which work in conjunction with a traffic control signal to produce images of vehicles disregarding a red signal and “running a red light.” Similar programs have been implemented in twenty-four other states.
