NJDOT to replace Park Avenue bridge
over Route 3 in Rutherford and Lyndhurst

(Trenton) -The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the start of a project to replace the Park Avenue Bridge over Route 3 in Rutherford Borough and Lyndhurst Township, Bergen County.

“The Park Avenue Bridge replacement reflects the State of New Jersey’s commitment to improve the condition of bridges statewide,” said Governor Jon S. Corzine. “

On Friday, December 5, NJDOT will shift Route 3 westbound toward the median barrier in order to establish a work zone on the right shoulder and prepare the site for construction. Construction will entail temporary nighttime single and double lane closures on Route 3 in both directions through December 2009. The closures will take place on Mondays to Thursdays from 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Fridays from 10:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. on Saturdays, Saturdays from 10:30 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Sundays and Sundays from 10:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. on Mondays.

In early 2009, NJDOT will shift traffic to the eastern half of the Park Avenue Bridge and establish a permanent work zone on the western half of the bridge. NJDOT will maintain one lane in each direction. The western half of the existing bridge will be demolished while the southbound side of the new bridge is constructed. NJDOT will also construct a temporary pedestrian bridge west of the bridge and remove the sidewalk on the eastern half of the existing bridge. Upon completion of the southbound side of the bridge in summer 2009, traffic will shift to the new structure and the remainder of the existing structure will be demolished.

Park Avenue traffic will be maintained in both directions during construction. The new Park Avenue structure will carry two lanes of traffic in each direction with left turn movements at the intersections of Park Avenue and Rutherford Avenue and Park Avenue and Marginal Road.

The $9.8 million project also includes drainage improvements, roadway resurfacing, sidewalk installation and curb installation on the Park Avenue approaches to the new bridge. The project is scheduled to be completed in February 2010.

NJDOT will also use Variable Messaging Signs throughout the area to inform motorists of all traffic pattern changes. Construction information and real time traffic information is available at www.511nj.org.
