NJDOT opens Alexander Road in West Windsor

New bridge over Amtrak rail line
completed amongst many safety improvements

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the opening of the new Alexander Road Bridge over the Amtrak Northeast Corridor rail line in West Windsor, Mercer County.

“The new Alexander Road Bridge will improve traffic flow and safety in West Windsor by providing an additional travel lane and a sidewalk for pedestrian and bicycle use,” said Governor Jon S. Corzine. “This project improves access to the Princeton Junction rail station, which is important to the economic vitality of the region.”

Shing-Fu Hsueh, Mayor of West Windsor Township added, “We are grateful to the State for funding this improved bridge and intersection.  It will definitely move traffic more efficiently and our residents who bike and walk now have a safe crossing over the Northeast Corridor train tracks.”

On Thursday afternoon, December 4, NJDOT opened the new Alexander Road Bridge to traffic. NJDOT had closed Alexander Road in June and implemented a local detour in order replace the bridge and install retaining walls and new drainage systems and relocate utility equipment. NJDOT will continue to relocate utility equipment and demolish the existing bridge without impacting traffic.

NJDOT’s $12 million project has replaced the deteriorated Alexander Road Bridge with a wider structure that carries two 12-foot travel lanes, four-foot shoulders and six-foot sidewalks. The new bridge and roadway are accessible to pedestrians and bicycles. NJDOT constructed new curbs, sidewalks, bicycle-compatible lanes and landscaping treatments. Pedestrian accommodations will enable area residents to more easily access the Princeton Junction Train Station, which is in close proximity to the Alexander Road Bridge. The project will also improve safety at the intersection of Alexander Road and North Post Road through the construction of a modern roundabout. The project is scheduled for completion in January 2009.
