NJDOT designates municipalities
for inclusion in Red Light Running Camera program

(Trenton) –The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the designation of six municipalities for the Red Light Running Automated Enforcement pilot program. Edison, Jersey City, Lawrence, Linden, New Brunswick and Wayne were designated for participation.

“The Red Light Running camera program can help communities supplement their traditional law enforcement resources,” noted Commissioner Stephen Dilts. “The installation of these cameras will increase safety in each of these twelve municipalities.”

Each of the selected municipalities includes specific locations that have a demonstrated history of violations and crashes related to red light running that has not been reduced by previous engineering, enforcement and education efforts. The pilot program is designed to determine whether a traffic control signal monitoring system may be an effective long-term tool to increase safety at these locations. Each municipality will set up its own distribution system for citations that result from camera images.

In January 2008, Assembly Bill 4314 established a five-year pilot program to determine the effectiveness of the installation and utilization of traffic control signal monitoring systems. Under the program, a traffic control signal monitoring system utilizes cameras and vehicle sensors, which work in conjunction with a traffic control signal to produce images of vehicles disregarding a red signal and “running a red light.” Similar programs have been implemented in twenty-four other states.

NJDOT previously designated Brick Township, Newark, East Brunswick, Piscataway, Roselle Park and Stafford for participation in the first-year pilot program.

In order to ensure that the pilot program is accessible to and representative of all regions of New Jersey, NJDOT in 2009 will designate municipalities from each region for participation in the program. NJDOT will continue to accept applications and encourages municipalities to apply for designation.
