RELEASE June 23, 2009

NJDOT to resurface eight miles
of Route 80 in Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties

(Trenton) - Commissioner Stephen Dilts today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will resurface approximately eight miles of Route 80 westbound from east of South Beverwyck Road to west of Route 23 in Essex, Morris and Passaic counties.

"This $9.9 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act project is providing essential infrastructure improvements to Route 80 while supporting and creating approximately 90 jobs," said Governor Jon S. Corzine.

"Resurfacing this critical segment of Route 80 westbound will provide a steadier and safer drive for motorists and commercial traffic and preserve the roadway," Commissioner Dilts added.

On Wednesday, June 24, NJDOT will begin a project to resurface I-80 westbound from milepost 45.6 to milepost 53.3 in Parsippany-Troy Hills and Montville in Morris County, Fairfield in Essex County, and Wayne in Passaic County. NJDOT will also repair ten bridge decks along this segment of I-80. The project was designed in-house by NJDOT staff and is scheduled for completion in December 2009.

Initial construction work will take place off of the roadway, and traffic impacts are anticipated to be minimal. Starting in July, NJDOT will implement overnight single and double lane closures on I-80 in order to resurface the roadway.

The following lane closure hours are scheduled in July as part of the project:

  • On the two lane sections of I-80 westbound, single-lane closures may be necessary from Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, from Friday at 10 p.m. to Saturday at 7 a.m., from Saturday at 10 p.m. to Sunday at 7 a.m., and from Sunday at 9 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m.
  • On the three lanes sections of I-80 westbound, single-lane closures may be necessary from Monday through Thursday from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day, from Friday at 9:30 p.m. to Saturday at 9 a.m., from Saturday at 8 p.m. to Sunday at 10 a.m., and from Sunday at 8 p.m. to Monday at 6 a.m.
  • On the three lanes sections of I-80 westbound, double-lane closures may be necessary from Monday through Thursday from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day, from Friday at 11 p.m. to Saturday at 7 a.m., from Saturday at 10 p.m. to Sunday at 10 a.m., and from Sunday at 10 p.m. to Monday at 6 a.m.

NJDOT will install variable message signs on I-80 to inform motorists of traffic pattern changes during construction. Real time travel and construction information is available online at www.511nj.org.
